MUSINGS

Things I've been noodling on.

Work. Community. Ordinary life. Usually something I've noticed and can't quite stop thinking about.

WHY I WRITE THESE DOWN

Mostly so I don't lose them

I notice things all day long and then forget most of them by dinner. This is where I try to catch a few before they slip away.

Nothing here is polished. It is just what I was turning over in my head on a given morning, written down close to how I actually think it.

Come back whenever. There will usually be something new, and if there isn't yet, there will be soon.

WHEN DID NOTICING BECOME SOMEONE ELSE'S JOB?

A question I keep circling back to

I was standing in a parking lot last week watching a man help an elderly woman get her bags into her car. Nobody asked him to. He just saw what was happening and stepped in.

It stuck with me because it felt rare. Not that people are unkind, but that we have gotten so used to someone else handling it. The greeter handles it. The manager handles it. The app handles it.

I don't have a tidy answer. I just keep asking myself when I last noticed something and actually did something about it, instead of assuming it was somebody's job but mine.

THE FLOWERS ALWAYS GO

On keeping things a little past their prime

There is a jar of flowers on my windowsill that has been dropping petals for three days. I keep meaning to toss them and I keep not doing it.

I think I like watching the slow part. The bright part is nice, but the going is honest in a way the arriving never is.

Most things in my life work the same way. I hang on a little longer than makes sense, not because I can't see it is ending, but because I want to watch it end instead of looking away.

WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN THE BOXES ON THE ORG CHART

The parts nobody puts in the meeting notes

I spend a fair amount of my working life inside org charts, strategy decks, boxes and lines that are supposed to explain how things get done.

But almost nothing important actually happens on the lines. It happens in the hallway conversation before the meeting. It happens when someone quietly fixes a problem nobody assigned them.

I keep trying to remember that the chart is not the company. The people are, and most of what they do for each other never makes it onto any chart at all.

This spot is waiting on purpose. Copy the pattern above: a date, a title, and a few honest paragraphs.
