IN THE KITCHEN

Something's cooking

Food is rarely just about the food.

SOURDOUGH ON THE COUNTER

It's always somewhere in the process

There is almost always a jar going. Feeding it, watching it, forgetting it and starting over. Some weeks it turns into bread. Some weeks it just sits there bubbling while I decide.

Either way it is part of the rhythm of the kitchen, quiet and a little alive.

DINNER FROM WHATEVER'S THERE

Not a recipe, just an evening

Most nights dinner starts with the refrigerator door open and no real plan. Whatever is in there gets looked at for a minute, then it becomes something.

It is rarely the meal I meant to make, and it is almost always fine.

RECIPES WORTH MAKING AGAIN

The ones that stick around

A few recipes have earned a permanent place. They are splattered and a little worn, and I keep making them because they keep working.

Nothing fancy. Just the ones I go back to.

KITCHEN NOTES

Things I've caught myself thinking while the stove is on

"The bread doesn't care if you're in a hurry."

"Somehow there is always enough."

"Nobody remembers what was on the table. They remember who was around it."

THE PEOPLE WHO END UP HERE

Nobody plans it, it just happens

However a gathering starts, it tends to end in the kitchen. Someone leans on the counter, someone else grabs a spoon, and suddenly everyone is in the way of dinner and none of us wants to leave.
