IN THE COMMUNITY

Pull up a chair

I believe we belong to one another.

THE TABLE KEEPS GETTING LONGER

There is always room for one more chair

There is almost always a chair being added somewhere. Another leaf for the table, another plate set out, another name added to the list before anyone asks twice.

Some weeks it is three people. Some weeks it is thirty, and we figure out the chairs as we go.

DINNER SHOWS UP ANYWAY

Helping rarely waits for a plan

Most help starts with no real plan. Someone hears about a hard week, and a dish gets made, a box gets packed, a ride gets offered before anyone figures out the details.

It is rarely the perfect thing. It shows up anyway, and that is fine for now.

GATHERINGS WORTH REPEATING

Whatever the occasion, we'll make one up

A potluck or a porch sit or a Tuesday for no reason at all, and people show up without much of a plan beyond showing up.

Some of them stick. Those are the ones we keep doing, on a shelf here or in someone else's calendar.

SHOWING UP TO HELP

Some jobs are better when nobody gets credit

We give time where it is needed, even when the job is mostly lifting, sorting, or wiping things down.

The people and places already doing the work know what helps. We try to listen, pitch in, and stay out of the way.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Things I've caught myself thinking while the chairs get set out

"Showing up counts for more than I used to think."

"Nobody needs the perfect dish. They need a dish."

"I didn't know half these people a year ago."

THE PEOPLE WHO SHOW UP

Same faces, different Tuesday

Most of what happens here started with someone showing up who didn't have to. Some of it is small, a ride or an extra chair. Some of it turns into the thing I'd miss most, and I never would have planned it that way.
